Some of my relatives might not know that my mother, Doris Carter Rooney, was a beautician back in the day. She worked for several years in downtown Muncie, mainly for Vera Frazier. I found an article from Nov. 14, 1937, in the Muncie Star about the opening of the new business.

grea-Mary Louisa Sargent was my great-grandmother. She was the second wife of my great-grandfather Lewis Carter, and was the mother of my grandfather Oren Carter and his sister Rachel Vada Carter Wheat. Mary, who died in 1922, was one of three children born to David H. Sargent, a prominent Methodist minister, and Elizabeth Babb. She had one brother, Charles William Sargent. Charles became a businessman and was successful in the clothing and textile industry. He was a silk merchant in southwest Ohio and southern Indiana and eventually in New Orleans, where he met and married Rosa Perrin. The couple then would move to St. Louis, where he was co-owner of Coyle & Sargent, a preeminent silk manufacturer and clothing company. Later, he was elected president of the Western Commercial Travelers Association. I found an article from the Dec. 30, 1903, edition of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch verifying that. It's the first time I've seen a photo of Charles, my great-great-uncle. |
