https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mONdXc1652o I've uncovered many awesome facts recently, such as meeting cousin Judy Bott Stack in Springfield, finding 4th-great-grandfather Edward Carter's pension documents from the Revolutionary War; a clear copy of the first marriage of great-grandpa Darius Gilmore; and finding Indiana birth, marriage and death certificates, including for my mother, Doris Carter Rooney. But the coolest thing I've found recently came by way of a new Carter cousin, who recently joined this group. Paula Carter, a cousin by marriage, is looking into the family history of her husband, Ethan Carter. This week, she unearthed a little nugget that led to a pretty cool find. She found an obituary for Marvin Carter, a 3rd cousin once removed, from the 1970s, in an Alexandria, Ind., newspaper. Marvin lived most of his life in Grant County, especially in Fairmount. Paula found that he had owned a place called Carter Motors in Fairmount. She then found that he owned a motorcycle shop, which turned out to be Carter Motors. Marvin and his wife owned the motorcycle shop for many years, according to her obituary, which also added "She co-owned/operated and maintained at their home, a motorcycle and automobile sales and repair service called Carters Motor's in Fairmount. ... She was preceded in death by 1 brother and 1 sister; and special friend James Dean." In 1947, a young man named James Dean, age 15, bought his first motorcycle from our cousin Marvin, whose shop was just down the road from Dean's aunt and uncle, with whom he had lived as a young boy. Marvin and his wife, Millie, became friends with the handsome young man, who used to hang out regularly at the motorcycle shop. Of course, a few years later, he would ride another motorcycle from Fairmount to New York City, where his acting career got its start. So the Carter family had a significant role in what would become the legendary, albeit short, career of the forever-cool James Dean.
